Combine a backdrop with floor protection
These sample plans reuse suitable seating, cushions and absorbent floor cloths. Shared fixings are counted once. Optional petals, extra furniture and tools are outside the subtotal.
- Doorway backdrop and floor protection: about ₹1550-₹2700. Setups 1 + 4. Includes each shared pack of fixings once. Reuse suitable seating, cushions and floor cloths.
- Living-room backdrop, floor and entrance: about ₹2750-₹4700. Setups 2 + 4 + 7. Includes each shared pack of fixings once. Reuse suitable seating, cushions and floor cloths.
How many marigold strings do you need?
Measure the width of the backdrop, then choose the largest gap you want between hanging strands. Enter the extra strands for your top swag to see how many whole packs to buy. This counts positions, not flower weight or strand length.
Without the calculator: a 3-ft doorway at 4-inch spacing needs 10 strings; a 6-ft wall needs 13 at 6-inch spacing or 19 at 4-inch spacing.
Setup 1 · Easy
Doorway marigold curtain

Ten artificial marigold strands across a 3-ft decorative doorway, with a dupatta at each side. Keep a separate clear entrance rather than blocking an active doorway.
- Space
- 3 ft wide door frame
- Approximate cost
- ₹850-₹1300
Materials and setup steps
What to gather
- Artificial marigold strands, about 5 ft: 10 strands (buy whole packs)
- 100 m craft twine: 1 100 m roll
- Pack of cable ties: 1 pack of 100
- Yellow dupattas: 2 dupattas
Put it together
- Use an existing curtain rod or suitable fixed rail above the decorative opening.
- Mark ten positions across a 3-ft width, approximately 4 inches apart.
- Attach the lightweight strands, shortening their hanging length to suit the opening.
- Drape a dupatta at each side and keep fabric clear of the walking route.
Check before the event: Strings that reach the floor get trodden on and stained. A doorway someone needs to walk through: keep one side open.
Setup 2 · Easy
Net curtain and marigold wall

Gathered net curtains with LED lights behind them, 13 vertical artificial marigold strands and a two-strand top swag across a 6-ft wall.
- Space
- 6 ft wide x 7 ft high wall
- Approximate cost
- ₹1450-₹2450
Materials and setup steps
What to gather
- Pack of two 7-ft net curtains: 2 packs of 2 x 7-ft net curtains
- Artificial marigold strands, about 5 ft: 15 strands (buy whole packs)
- 10 m LED string lights: 2 x 10 m strings
- Pack of wall hooks: 1 pack of 10
- Pack of cable ties: 1 pack of 100
- 100 m craft twine: 1 100 m roll
Put it together
- Fix a rod, a taut twine line or three to four strong hooks about 7 ft up.
- Hang the net panels gathered, not flat, so they overlap.
- Run the fairy lights in loose zigzags behind the net.
- Hang 13 strings in front, 6 in apart, ending at seat height or just above.
- Swag two strings along the top to hide the rod and twine.
Check before the event: Adhesive hooks can pull paint off and may not hold fresh flowers. Test one with a full string a day before. Plugging the lights where the haldi paste bucket will sit.
Setup 3 · Moderate
No-drill freestanding backdrop

A freestanding support for lightweight net and artificial garlands. Check the stand dimensions and rated load; a photo backdrop stand is not a support for people or a swing.
- Space
- 6 ft wide backdrop; allow space for supports
- Approximate cost
- ₹2000-₹3900
Materials and setup steps
What to gather
- Backdrop support stand: 1 backdrop stand
- Pack of two 7-ft net curtains: 2 packs of 2 x 7-ft net curtains
- Artificial marigold strands, about 5 ft: 13 strands (buy whole packs)
- Pack of cable ties: 1 pack of 100
Put it together
- Use a 6-ft-wide support for this materials example and confirm its rated load. At 6-inch spacing, 13 hanging strands span 6 ft; a 9-ft backdrop needs 19, with fabric and support sized to match.
- Assemble and secure the base according to the manufacturer instructions.
- Attach lightweight fabric and artificial strands without exceeding the rated load.
- Leave room behind the seat and keep the supports outside walking routes.
Check before the event: A support that is not rated for the combined weight of the fabric and garlands. Unsecured feet or supports inside the walking route; follow the supplier instructions for the location.
Setup 4 · Easy
Floor baithak and turmeric zone

A stable adult seat with waterproof floor protection underneath and an absorbent, non-slip top layer. Reuse suitable seating, mats and cushions you already own.
- Space
- Measure the seating area and clear guest route
- Approximate cost
- ₹700-₹1400
Materials and setup steps
What to gather
- 12 × 15 ft waterproof tarpaulin: 1 12 x 15 ft tarpaulin
Also bring suitable adult seating, owned mats and cushions, an absorbent top cloth, edge tape and towels. These are not included in the tarpaulin subtotal.
Put it together
- Measure the seating and splash area first. The 12 x 15 ft tarpaulin is the priced product size, not a minimum room size; choose backing that fits the space.
- Fit the waterproof backing flat under an absorbent, non-slip top cloth. Secure all edges and avoid loose folds or raised edges in the walking route.
- Use a stable seat suitable for an adult, then arrange owned mats and cushions around it.
- Keep towels and a waste container nearby; agree on clean-up with the venue.
Check before the event: An old bedsheet alone is not a waterproof barrier. A small puja chowki is not automatically suitable as an adult seat.
Setup 5 · Moderate
Marigold ring backdrop

A full-size floral ring behind a low seat. Check the ring diameter and base with a decorator or rental supplier; small balloon hoops are a different product.
- Space
- ring stand, 5-6 ft diameter
Materials and setup steps
What to gather
- Adult-size ring frame with a stable base: 1, sized to your seated arrangement
- Lightweight artificial flower strands: Agree full-ring or partial-arc coverage with the supplier; strand length, flower fullness and ring size determine the quantity
- Rated fixings and optional LED lights: Ask the supplier to include them
Put it together
- Measure the available width and height, including space for the seat.
- Ask for a full-size ring and a base suitable for the location. Confirm the complete frame dimensions.
- Agree on flower coverage and installation with the supplier; keep the main motif above the seated person.
Check before the event: A ring meant for balloon bouquets that is too small to frame a seated person. Fresh strings that make a light ring top-heavy.
Setup 6 · Hire a decorator
Umbrella canopy for a terrace or courtyard

Decorative umbrellas and garlands over an outdoor celebration space. Treat this as a decorator-installed arrangement; decorative umbrellas do not provide reliable weather cover.
- Space
- about 10 x 10 ft
Materials and setup steps
What to gather
- Decorative umbrellas and lightweight garlands: Confirm quantity and size with the decorator
- Suitable freestanding support and installation: Include in the quote
Put it together
- Send the decorator the terrace or courtyard measurements and a reference layout.
- Ask how the support is secured and how wind or rain changes the plan.
- Confirm installation, removal and a usable indoor backup. Keep guest circulation clear.
Check before the event: Paper parasols in wind or drizzle. Tying lines to anything that can bend, such as plastic pipes or thin grilles. Working at height on a chair; use a ladder with someone holding it.
Setup 7 · Easy
Entrance toran and LED path

An artificial leaf toran, four artificial marigold strands and battery tealights placed outside the walking route.
- Space
- one door and the path
- Approximate cost
- ₹850-₹1050
Materials and setup steps
What to gather
- Artificial leaf toran: 1 toran
- Artificial marigold strands, about 5 ft: 4 strands (buy whole packs)
- Pack of 24 battery tealights: 1 pack of 24
- Pack of wall hooks: 1 pack of 10
Put it together
- Hang the toran across the top of the door.
- Hang two strings down each side of the frame.
- Set the tealights along the steps or path, off the walking line.
Check before the event: Real diyas on stairs where saris and dupattas brush past.
Setup 8 · Hire a decorator
Decorator's floral canopy or swing setup

A canopy or mandap frame covered in flowers, a jhoola or floral seat, and full floor seating. Built and removed by a decorator. Get an itemised quote rather than relying on a photo.
- Space
- from about 12 x 12 ft
Materials and setup steps
What to gather
- Canopy or swing, flowers, seating and lighting: Request an itemised quote
- Floor protection, installation and removal: Include labour and transport
Put it together
- Send the decorator the floor size, photos of the space, the time slot and what happens in the space next.
- Ask for an itemised quote: frame, flower type and quantity, fabric, seating, lighting, labour, transport, setup and removal times.
- Ask who protects the floor and who cleans up the turmeric.
Check before the event: Comparing quotes from photos alone. A venue that does not allow wet turmeric or charges for cleaning.
Prepare your chosen setup
Measure first, choose a setup, then use its materials list to check what you already own and what to buy. Confirm setup access, wet-turmeric and clean-up rules with the venue. Print the guide to keep the materials and steps together.
Get the photos and the changeover right
Check the arrangement through your own phone before the event. Face the seat toward soft daylight, move clutter out of the frame and leave enough backdrop above the seated person. A decorative canopy is not a substitute for weather cover.
For a haldi-to-mehndi changeover, clear and dry the floor, replace stained cloths, and keep reusable artificial flowers and fabric. Add comfortable artist seating and focused light. Browse mehndi designs for the next part of the celebration.
Ask every decorator for the same quote
Share the space dimensions, date, event slot and reference layout. Request separate figures for the frame, flowers, fabric, seating, lights, labour, transport, installation and removal. Ask the venue about turmeric, cleaning charges and setup access.
Use the decor package checklist when comparing quotations, or browse venues in an existing city.
Haldi decoration questions
How can I decorate for haldi at home on a low budget?
Start with a doorway backdrop and reuse suitable dupattas, seating and cushions. Measure first, then price the listed materials in whole packs. Include floor protection and delivery rather than treating the flowers as the complete budget.
How many marigold strings do I need for a backdrop?
For a 6-ft width, start with 13 strings at 6-inch spacing or 19 at 4-inch spacing. Add any top swag separately. This counts hanging positions; confirm strand lengths and the pack contents before ordering.
Should I use fresh or artificial marigolds?
Artificial strands are lightweight and reusable, and their stated lengths make a sample budget easier to compare. For fresh flowers, ask a local florist to quote the required length, fullness and collection time; garlands sold by the piece can have very different sizes.
Can I reuse haldi decoration for a mehndi function?
Usually you can keep a lightweight fabric and artificial-flower backdrop. Allow time to clear and dry the floor, change any stained fabric, and arrange comfortable seating and task lighting for the mehndi artist.
What should I ask a venue or decorator?
Confirm whether wet turmeric is permitted, the exact space and event slot, floor protection, cleaning, installation, removal and all charges. Ask the decorator to itemise the frame, flowers, fabric, seating, lights, labour and transport.
How we estimated costs and the sources used
Prices were observed on 3-6 November 2026. They are indicative listing prices, not tested-build bills or guaranteed offers. Whole packs of the listed 5-ft artificial strands are counted; quantities, delivery and availability can change the total. Fresh garlands with unknown lengths and unconfirmed full-size frames are excluded from priced plans.
