Mehndi Designs for Hands and Feet: Simple, Arabic & Bridal Ideas

Here are 231 mehndi designs (also spelled mehendi), from a ten-minute palm flower to bridal sets that run from fingertips to elbows. Each design shows where it goes, roughly how long it takes and how hard it is, so you can pick one to try at home or show your mehndi artist. Use the filters to narrow the list, or jump straight to a style.

Simple Front Hand Mehndi Designs for Beginners

Start here if you are new to mehndi. These palm designs use one or two motifs and plenty of open skin, so a small wobble is easy to hide. Practise the main flower on paper first, then on your own palm.

Simple and Easy Palm Designs

Henna on palm (front hand): one round flower in the middle of the palm, filled fingertips and a thin band on each finger.

Simple Palm Flower Mehndi with Filled Fingertips

EasyPalm (front hand)10-20 min

A single round flower blooms in the centre of the palm, its petals traced in one clean stroke around a small filled bud. Every fingertip is filled solid, and a thin band circles each finger just below it, so the eye travels from the tips back to the flower. Plenty of bare skin keeps it light enough for an everyday look.

For: Any festival, Office, College

Henna on palm (front hand): five small flowers in a line from the wrist up to the index finger.

Diagonal Flower Trail Mehndi for the Palm

EasyPalm (front hand)10-20 min

Five small flowers climb in a neat line from the wrist to the tip of the index finger, each slightly smaller than the one before. Tiny dots between the blooms keep the trail connected without crowding it. The diagonal flatters the palm, and once the flower shape is mastered it takes only a few minutes.

For: Any festival, Office, College

Henna on palm (front hand): a semicircle of small leaves above the wrist with dotted fingertips.

Leaf Crown Mehndi at the Base of the Palm

EasyPalm (front hand)10-20 min

A semicircle of small pointed leaves sits just above the wrist like a crown at the base of the palm. The leaves fan out from a curved line, each finished with a dot at its tip. Dotted fingertips echo the crown, and the open palm between them keeps the whole design airy.

For: Any festival, Office, College

Henna on palm (front hand): short rows of dots on each finger and a single small flower in the palm.

Palm Flower Mehndi with Dotted Fingers

EasyPalm (front hand)10-20 min

Short rows of dots run up each finger like strings of tiny beads, stopping just below the tips. A single small flower in the middle of the palm ties them together. Because almost every element is a dot, it is one of the easiest patterns to practise on your own hand.

For: Any festival, Office, College

Henna on palm (front hand): an outlined heart in the palm with two tiny vines curling out of it.

Heart and Twin Vine Mehndi for the Palm

EasyPalm (front hand)10-20 min

An outlined heart sits in the centre of the palm, left open inside so the skin glows through once the colour darkens. Two fine vines curl from its top, each ending in a tiny leaf. It is sweet and simple, a natural pick for college days, birthdays and first-time mehndi.

For: Any festival, Office, College

Henna on palm (front hand): a small sun with straight rays in the palm and plain fingers with tip caps.

Sunburst Palm Mehndi with Filled Fingertips

Stylish Back Hand Mehndi Designs

The back of the hand is what people see when you greet them and in most photos. These designs range from a single vine to lace work across the knuckles. Henna usually stains lighter here than on the palm, so slightly bolder lines read better.

How to get a dark, long-lasting stain

    • Use natural henna. Natural henna paste is green-brown and leaves an orange stain that darkens to reddish brown. It never turns jet black. So-called “black henna” can contain PPD, a hair-dye chemical that can cause serious skin reactions, according to the US FDA.
    • Start with clean, dry skin. Wash the area and skip lotion or oil beforehand, so the paste touches bare skin.
    • Leave the paste on as long as you can. Many artists suggest at least four to six hours, and overnight for bridal mehndi. Let it dry and flake, then scrape it off instead of washing it.
    • Keep water away for a few hours after the paste comes off.
    • Give the colour time. A fresh stain looks orange and deepens over the next day or two. For a wedding, most brides apply mehndi one or two days before the ceremony.
    • Expect different shades on different skin. Palms, fingertips and soles usually stain darker than the back of the hand or the arm.

Before you book a mehndi artist

    • Shortlist two or three designs here and send their links. Every card has its own link, so your artist sees exactly the design you mean.
    • Agree on coverage: palm only or both sides, and whether the design stops at the wrist or goes up to the elbow.
    • Ask whether the price is per hand, per side or per person, and how long each guest takes if you are booking for a group.
    • Ask what paste the artist uses, and turn down any “black henna”.
    • Plan the timing so the paste can stay on for several hours before you need to wash your hands or eat with them.

Hosting a mehndi function? Look for a space with bright, even light, comfortable low seating and room for guests to sit while their paste dries before dinner is served.

    Frequently asked questions

Which mehndi design is easiest for beginners?

Start with a single flower on the palm, dotted fingers or a short vine. The simple front hand section uses one or two motifs with open skin, so mistakes are easy to hide.

How long should I keep mehndi on?

Many artists suggest at least four to six hours, and overnight for bridal mehndi. Longer contact usually gives a deeper stain. Scrape the dry paste off rather than washing it.

How long does bridal mehndi take?

Our estimates for the full bridal sets in this guide range from about 4 to 6 hours, depending on coverage and fill. Agree the coverage with your artist in advance and book enough time.

What is the difference between Arabic and Indian mehndi?

Arabic mehndi usually has bold flowers and leaves in a diagonal trail with open skin. Traditional Indian mehndi fills more of the hand with fine detail such as paisley, jaali and figures.

    Is black henna safe?

Avoid it. Natural henna stains orange to reddish brown. Black henna can contain PPD, which can cause serious skin reactions.
